CRITERIA: Each student candidate for membership is required to meet the criteria for the undergraduate category of membership (completed ½ of the nursing curriculum) or graduate category of membership (completed ¼ of the nursing curriculum), have achieved academic excellence (for Upsilon this equates to a 3.5 grade point average or higher), have no incomplete grades, and meet the expectations of academic integrity. For nurse leader applicants, each candidate will need to complete the separate nurse leader application.

Are you a born leader? Do you ever wish you could be more of a leader than a follower? Would you like to be mentored by other leaders in the nursing profession? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, then the Leadership Intern Program might be for you!
The Leadership Intern Program provides three new members (those entering their 4th sequence at NYU Meyers) the opportunity to work closely with the leaders of the Upsilon Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International. As a Leadership Intern you will function as a leader-in-training within the organization.
You will receive various benefits for your service including: ♦ Payment of your first-time NCLEX examination (up to $200.00) ♦ Ability to network with nurse leaders ♦ Leadership skill development ♦ Great resume builder
Our three nursing interns will be assigned to the following roles. Below the roles, we have listed some key qualities that may make you especially qualified for the work of the role or perhaps you may want to develop these skills!

Sigma Upsilon Fall 2022 Call for Fall 2022 Membership Applications
The Upsilon Chapter of the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International, accepts applications for membership twice per year. Undergraduate student applications are accepted in the fall, while applications for graduate students and nurse leaders are accepted in the spring. Our annual induction for all new inductees occurs in the spring.
Sigma is committed to fostering excellence, scholarship, and leadership in nursing to improve health care worldwide. Sigma promotes the use of nursing research in health care delivery and makes its resources available to all people and institutions interested in the latest knowledge in nursing care.
Criteria for membership, established by Upsilon Chapter and Sigma, are as follows:

The fall induction cycle opens yearly in October. Spring induction cycle opens yearly in February. Undergraduate students who are in their third or fourth sequence of the program and graduate students who have finished at least one-quarter of their program may apply. Nurse leader applicants can apply at anytime. We will also take applications for undergraduate students that graduated in January or who are entering their fourth seq. Applicants will receive notification of acceptance by November.

Program Purposes and Procedures
Purpose
The Leadership Intern Program has been implemented to promote mentoring of new members, to develop future chapter leaders, and to promote innovative chapter practices.
Procedure
- Each fall, the Upsilon Board and Leadership Succession Committee will determine the areas of focus as well as the compensation package for the following year’s Leadership Intern Program.
- The Leadership Succession Committee will develop the application.
- At the November New Member Orientation, a member of the Leadership Succession Committee or designee will communicate information about the Leadership Intern Program to new members. He/she will also be responsible for alerting other inductees electronically who are not in attendance.
- Applications will be due in December 12, 2021. The Leadership Succession Committee will review applicants and make recommendations to the Board.
- The Leadership Interns will be selected by the Board December 27, 2021
- The Leadership Intern’s tenure generally lasts from January through June, 2022.

Meet Dr. Sandra Maldonado, EdD, CNM, FNP-BC, SANE
Dr. Maldonado earned her Doctorate of Education from Richard W. Riley College of Education and Leadership from Walden University, Minneapolis, Minnesota. She also has Masters in Nursing, and Post-Masters in Nurse Midwifery, Nursing Education, and Family Nurse Practitioner. She graduated from Downstate College of Nursing with her Bachelors in Nursing and originally received her Bachelor’s of Science in Biology from Hunter College. She has been teaching Maternal Child Nursing for over 15 years in both Associate, and Bachelors Nursing Program. She served in the United States Air Force as Flight Nurse and left before the Kuwait war started. She is committed to serving in the Church Council and is also a perinatal loss counselor.
